20th January 2008:

SORRENTO BUS TRIP

Sorrento Bus Trip

Sunday 20 January 2008 did not dawn fair. It was a brooding morning, dark with intermittent rain showers. Overnight, several sports-minded Ithacans had stayed up late watching TV, some the English football derby with an inspirational victory by Sheffield Wednesday over traditional foes Sheffield United, others the tennis marathon between Hewitt and Baghdatis. Despite this sleep deprivation, around 8.30 am. 40 Ithacans and friends turned up at the clubrooms, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, fit and ready for a day trip to Sorrento. Well-prepared for any eventuality with umbrellas, coats, sunscreen, sun-glasses and bathers (well, perhaps not bathers) the group set off for the Peninsula.

The drizzling rain gradually tempered and by the time the bus arrived at Arthur’s Seat, via a scenic winding road up the mountain, the sun had come out. The group partook of morning tea and enjoyed the stunning scenery and then it was off to Sorrento. The bus captain deposited the passengers at the end of the centre at noon and they dispersed in all directions to do their own thing. Some ate at the Greek restaurant there whilst others partook of the very Aussie fish’n chips. Still others had tasty fresh sandwiches and a cup of coffee. And of course they didn’t miss out on the traditional Sorrento vanilla slices. Bang goes the diet! After lunch a casual stroll around the shops, galleries and the Antipodes Book Shop then at 2.30 pm, back on the bus for a tour of the back beaches of Sorrento and Portsea. Then a leisurely trip back home via the beach road stopping for 20 minutes at Frankston to stretch the legs and take the ubiquitous group photo. It was a very happy, contented group of Ithacans who were deposited safely back at the Clubrooms at 5.45 pm and eagerly looking forward to their next trip.

The next bus trip, tentatively planned for early April, is to the Werribee Zoo with lunch at Joseph’s Restaurant. If you are interested ring Kristalenia Collins on 9802 8578.
